Iraqi librarian saved 30,000 books during 2003 invasion
“At the beginning of the war on Iraq, the governor [of Basra] took the library over as a headquarters for himself and his guards, mounting machine guns on top of the building. So, we asked the governor if we could take the important books to our homes, but he rejected the idea. OCLC/RLUK Report emphasises the importance of Special Collections
The report identifies the key role special collections and archives play a in the future of research libraries. Significant challenges face institutions wishing to capitalize on that value, however, if they are to fully leverage and make available the rich content in special collections in order to support research, teaching, and community engagement.
The report shows that use of all types of special collections material has increased across the board and provides institutional leaders, special collections staff, and archivists evidence and inspiration to plan for much needed and deserved transformation of special collections and their use.
